THE NEWS: Canadian Strategic Missions Corporation unveiled three distinct nuclear reactor platforms today: POLAR-1, JAY-1 and ORCA-1. The launch retires the company's earlier LEUNR concept in favour of an application-specific strategy, with each platform aimed at a different strategic environment: Arctic and defence operations, lunar infrastructure, and domestic nuclear workforce development.
WHY IT MATTERS: This is CSMC's clearest signal yet that its Arctic microreactor work is maturing into a multi-platform business, and it comes alongside a rapid buildout of the team and government backing behind it, evidence the company is racing to move faster than Ottawa's own timeline for Arctic nuclear power.
THE DETAILS:
POLAR-1 is the platform most directly relevant to defence readers: a transportable, megawatt-scale microreactor designed for Arctic communities, defence installations and remote industrial sites, sized for transport aboard military airlift including the C-17. CSMC is targeting first criticality by 2028, with fleet-scale deployment envisioned from 2030 onward, well ahead of Ottawa's own goal of demonstrating one Arctic reactor by 2035.
"Government timelines tend to move from the top down, and we do not think 2035 matches the pace the warfighter needs or Canada's capabilities require," founder and CEO Daniel Sax told Vanguard.
JAY-1 is a compact space reactor built for lunar bases, scientific payloads and communications infrastructure, addressing the baseload power problem of lunar-night survival. ORCA-1 is a research reactor platform aimed at training, technology validation and workforce development, giving students, researchers, regulators and industry partners hands-on reactor access.
Sax drew a distinction on how POLAR-1 actually operates in the field: the reactors are transportable, not mobile. They can be moved into place, but none of them will be driven around once installed. Canada's regulatory framework has no existing provision for relocating a nuclear reactor, something Sax expects will evolve alongside the country's broader regulatory posture.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
"Reliable energy is becoming the crucial national strategic capability," Sax said of the three-platform launch. "Whether supporting Arctic operations, strengthening national defence, enabling scientific research, or powering future lunar infrastructure, these platforms are being developed for environments where conventional energy solutions fall short."
On what a reactor demonstration actually involves, Sax was specific: it's a criticality experiment, taking the reactor critical and confirming its safety systems perform as modelled, not a finished, switched-on power plant. "That is the demonstration, showing the key systems function and meet the required safety threshold," he said.
BY THE NUMBERS: CSMC has grown from 12 employees to 33 this year and has roughly 20 open roles across business, engineering, government relations and Indigenous relations. In the past week alone, the company hired the former chief nuclear officer of Bruce Power, a former chief financial officer, and a former US nuclear submarine operator. Sax also pointed to what he described as a couple dozen government contracts delivered on time and on budget as evidence of CSMC's track record against newer entrants in the space.
THE BIG PICTURE: CSMC, founded in 2020 as Canadian Space Mining Corporation before rebranding, has backed its Arctic reactor push with real federal money. FedDev Ontario put $4.5 million behind accelerating the microreactor toward detailed design and a fuelled demonstration, with minister Evan Solomon framing the investment as part of strengthening Canada's defence industrial base amid tariff pressure on Canadian business. CSMC has separately landed a Telesat MOU for remote satellite monitoring of deployed reactors and a $3-million NGen-backed manufacturing project with Stern Laboratories.
Indigenous partnerships run through the Arctic plan as a long-term commitment rather than a consultation checkbox, according to Sax, who has been engaging Indigenous partners for several years alongside the company's technical work.
