Magellan Aerospace has been awarded a contract from the Government of Canada to manufacture the M-72 Light Anti-Tank Weapon under Canada’s Munitions Supply Program, giving the country its own domestic source for one of the most widely used anti-armour weapons in the world.

Why it matters: Canada just locked in domestic production of a combat-proven weapon system, a step toward less reliance on foreign suppliers for critical munitions.

The deal: Magellan Aerospace won the contract to produce the M-72 LAWM-72 LAW as part of Canada’s sovereign defence industrial strategy.

Why it’s notable: The M-72 is fielded widely around the world. Building it at home means Canada controls its own supply chain instead of depending on outside sources.

What they’re saying: Haydn Martin, Magellan’s VP of Business Development, Marketing and Contracts: “Together with the Government of Canada, we are ensuring a sovereign manufacturing capability that will strengthen Canada’s national security, and maintain high-value employment, and provide the Canadian Armed Forces with a secure, resilient domestic source of critical defence equipment. This investment demonstrates Canada’s commitment to building world-class industrial capabilities that will serve the country for decades to come.”

The big picture: This fits Canada’s push to grow its sovereign defence industrial base, boost production capacity, and contribute to a NATO-compatible North American supply chain. A proven weapon, now made at home. Jobs stay in Canada, and so does the supply chain.
