NordSpace Ventures, the investment arm of NordSpace Corp., has taken a stake in North Vector Dynamics (NVD), a Calgary defence startup racing to give Canada a full-spectrum sovereign missile capability.
Why it matters: Ottawa wants more of its defence hardware built at home. This deal pairs a rocket-engine maker with a missile maker — both Canadian-owned, both ITAR-free — betting the overlap between orbital launch and precision strike is bigger than it looks.
The state of play:
NVD joins Wyvern, the Alberta hyperspectral-imaging company, as NordSpace Ventures' second known portfolio bet.
The fund is chasing Canadian-owned tech that fits Ottawa's Defence Industrial Strategy — sovereign space, defence, and dual-use plays.
NordSpace says more deals are coming "in the months ahead."
Who NVD is: Calgary-based, spun out of University of Calgary engineers, led by CEO Paul Ziadé with alumni of NASA and the Canadian Armed Forces on staff. It builds counter-UAS interceptors and aerial targets today, with hypersonics on the roadmap. It's also part of a $4.2 million DRDC contract on high-speed aeropropulsion.
The technical thread — two, actually:
Engines. NordSpace's Hadfield-150, a patent-pending engine built entirely in Canada for its Tundra launch vehicles, shares DNA with what precision missile systems need. NordSpace says it'll open up that propulsion and manufacturing infrastructure to NVD.
Hypersonics. Both companies sit inside the Hypersonic Innovation Network, a university-led research consortium funded through DND's IDEaS program and DRDC. It's building Canadian expertise in propulsion, flight dynamics, guidance, and materials for hypersonic vehicles — directly feeding NORAD modernization. It dovetails with NordSpace's own SHARP program, which flies Canadian-built supersonic and hypersonic test vehicles from sites across the country.

The big picture: Hypersonics is shaping up as the decade's defining allied defence race, and Canada has largely watched from the sidelines while the U.S., China, and Russia field systems. This deal is a bet that shared engines, shared test ranges, and a shared DRDC relationship can compress the timeline — and that a launch company and a missile company end up building a lot of the same thing.
What's next: NordSpace Ventures says it's actively scouting more Canadian targets. Watch for further announcements as it builds out a bench of sovereign space and defence bets.
