Babcock has been awarded a six-year extension of the Victoria In-Service Support Why it matters: The Royal Canadian Legion turns 100 today — a century after Parliament created it to unite Great War veterans, it's still the connective tissue between Canada's veteran community and civilian life.

What she's saying: Veterans Affairs Minister Jill McKnight marked the milestone with a statement praising the Legion's endurance and reach.

  • The Legion was incorporated by a special Act of Parliament in 1926 to unite organizations of Veterans of the First World War across the country.

  • Its founding goals — supporting veterans and families, honouring sacrifice, and strengthening national unity — still drive its work today, McKnight said.

The big picture: McKnight framed the Legion as more than a remembrance institution — it's operational infrastructure for veteran transition.

  • Beyond the Poppy campaign and remembrance events, she credited the Legion with helping veterans transition from military and RCMP service to civilian life through advocacy and practical support.

  • VAC positioned itself as a partner, not just an observer, saying the department is proud to work alongside the Legion in a shared commitment to honour service and support veterans, CAF and RCMP members, and their families.

What's next: McKnight said the Legion's role isn't static — as veterans' needs continue to evolve, the Legion's spirit of service, remembrance, and community remains as important as ever.
