Volatus Aerospace has been awarded a five-year contract by the Government of Canada to supply low-cost tactical intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance uncrewed aircraft systems to the Canadian Armed Forces.
The award came through the first Request for Proposal issued under Stream 1 of the Defence Drone Initiative Marketplace, covering uncrewed and autonomous systems and counter-UxS. Volatus had previously qualified across all five DDI streams.
The details
Initial procurement: 100 tactical ISR UAS systems
Option volume: up to an additional 4,900 systems, for a potential total of 5,000
Government's pricing framework: a maximum of $5,000 per system and a procurement envelope capped at $25 million
Volatus' actual contracted pricing remains commercially confidential
The contract covers an end-to-end package: aircraft, payloads, ground control stations, data links, training, sustainment, spare parts, documentation, and software and firmware support. Delivery of the initial tranche is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Canada retains sole discretion over whether to exercise the additional options. The company and the release are explicit that the optional systems are not committed purchases, backlog or revenue.

He said the award validates the company's integrated model, which extends beyond aircraft delivery into payload integration, training, sustainment and technical support.
The bigger picture
Volatus points to its Innovation and Manufacturing Hub in Mirabel, Que., and its Operations Control Centre in Vaughan, Ont., as evidence it can support Ottawa's push to build a more resilient domestic defence industrial base. Qualification across all five DDI streams also positions the company to compete for future work in communications, engineering and integration, testing and training, and innovation and experimentation, though each opportunity will run through its own separate procurement process.
Background
The Defence Drone Initiative launched in July as a new procurement pathway meant to speed Canadian uncrewed and autonomous systems from concept to operational fielding, connecting CAF and Canadian Coast Guard requirements with domestic robotics, artificial intelligence, sensors and advanced manufacturing expertise. It supports one of the 10 sovereign capabilities identified under Canada's Defence Industrial Strategy.
