Budget 2026 doubles down on the rearmament story Ottawa has been telling since last year. Core defence spending climbs to $99.2 billion by 2030-31, and the government says it has a funded plan to hit 4% of GDP this decade.
The new announcements are smaller than the headline totals suggest. Most of the defence measures in the budget draw on money already set aside in the fiscal framework or inside DND’s existing budget.
Why it matters: For industry, the signal is volume and continuity rather than fresh surprises. The cash is there for drones, munitions inputs, space launch and quantum, but much of it comes from previously announced envelopes now pointed at specific programs.
